NORTH CANTON, Ohio – March 03, 2016 – Local software development company Squirrels LLC has been awarded Business of the Year by the North Canton Chamber of Commerce. Squirrels accepted the award at the 2016 Annual Awards Dinner held at the Kent State University at Stark Conference Center on March 2.
Previous recipients of this award include The Hoover Company, Harry London’s Candies, Inc., Akron-Canton Airport and Walsh University among others.
When accepting the award, Squirrels co-founder Andrew Gould reflected, “It's honestly a bit of blind luck that we ended up in North Canton. Our sleepy condo complex was selected out of convenience for early employees, but it ended up being a great place to grow.”
Squirrels plans to stay in the area and has active expansion and development plans at its headquarters on Wilbur Dr. NE. The company is committed to maintaining local community involvement while managing a global customer base.
Staying local and catering to local needs, the company has plans to create a “tech hub” of like-minded companies and individuals at their complex off of Main Street.
“It's awesome and a little funny to receive this award almost eight years after starting the company,” Gould said. “When you think ‘best company,’ you typically think about something brand new and shiny.’”
The company has been at the same location since 2008 but only recently became involved in the local community when it was able to “shed its reclusive shell.”
“We joined the Chamber in 2013, developed a good relationship with Eric Bowles, the city's Economic Development Director and began attending events like the Main Street Festival and meetings about bringing super-fast fiber internet to everyone in Stark County,” Gould said.
Gould noted that Squirrels employees are motivated by the area and enjoy the many amenities nearby.
“The small-town feel and low cost of living paired with a humble Midwest work ethic and a backyard connection to anywhere in the world (Akron-Canton Airport) means any business can start, expand and succeed in North Canton,” he said. “We're proof.”
Squirrels also received letters of recognition from several state representatives, including Ohio Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown; Ohio Gov. John Kasich; Ohio Reps. Jim Renacci and Bob Gibbs; and Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.
This recognition comes after Fortune Magazine recently named Squirrels the third Best Workplace in Technology in the nation and one of the 50 Best Workplaces for Camaraderie.
